About ME....
This year begins my 19th year of teaching! I can't believe it!
I received my bachelor's degree in teaching and psychology from the University of Rhode Island. After graduating I was offered an opportunity to teach overseas at The Overseas Family School in Singapore. I was given only 24 hours to decide whether or not to go.... I knew I had to accept the challenge and it *was* the amazing experience I knew it would be. My "first class" consisted of students from 15 different nationalities including 4 who spoke no English! The success of that first year teaching taught me I can do anything.
After teaching overseas I moved back to Rhode Island and taught grades 1 and 3. I then returned to my homestate of Connecticut. I was the Mathematics Enrichment Program teacher for 2 years in Simsbury. This experience focusing only on mathematics truly transformed how I teach math; especially how I address (challenge) the quick math learner.
In 2000, I chose to accept a new opportunity teaching 4th and then 5th at Canton Intermediate School. I am grateful for all I have learned here at CIS. Our implementation of the reading and writing workshop as well as our adoption of Responsive Classroom techniques has made me a very well-rounded teacher.
I love being with children (probably because in many ways I am *still* a child! shh!). I love teaching students and I love learning from students. It is this reciprocity, I think, that gives me the feeling of awe when I say this is my 18th year (and counting) of being an educator. SCHOOL IS FUN!!!
