Welcome to Room 101

Our day starts with all of the students assuming the responsibility of signing in and choosing their lunch preference. We then enjoy the ten minutes before morning announcements enjoying each other's company and just simply "socializing." Perhaps the favorite part of my day is Responsive Classroom (morning meeting) where we greet each other, share our favorite experiences and do a fun-type activity when time allows. After that, the entire fifth grade is off to math. After an hour or so, we return to Reader's and Writer's workshop where creative writing and the pure enjoyment of reading occurs along with mini lesson that address the needs of our curriculum.

Each week, we have a variety of specials that include gym, art, music, library, and computer lab. My favorite subject to teach is Social Studies where we learn about the Revolutionary War, the U.S. Government, Civil War and this year we'll introduce Civil Rights. I try to include assimulations to help the students get a real 'feel' for the times.

Each day I try to make learning fun and to provide students with an environment that is fun to be in and safe- a place where the students want to be and aren't afraid to learn.
