       First grade is such an exciting year!  This is a time students blossom both academically and socially.  Through a nurturing environment, they become budding readers, writers, mathematicians and scientists.  In addition, students develop friendships and learn the importance of being a good citizen.

SNAPSHOT OF OUR DAY!

Daily Opening
·       “Early Bird” morning work – often relates to a skill we are working on.    Intended to help students settle down in the morning.
·       Pledge of allegiance/song
·       Moment of silence

Morning Meeting / Warm up
·       The morning meeting /warm up provides an enriched learning experience on a consistent daily basis!
·       Incorporates math concepts through:
·       Lunch count (counting, sorting, adding, subtracting, tallying, comparing & graphing)
·       Daily money count represents days we’ve been in school (introduction to money concepts)
·       Calendar skills – patterns, sequencing, number recognition, measurement of time.
·       Addition activities: “morning math minute”, 100 chart counting (2’s,5’s,10’s,25’s) and many
        “teachable moments.”
·        Social skills/Community citizenship – greeting to one another, interacting as a group, encouraging one another. Talking and asking questions.
·        Language Arts – shared reading of poems & songs, interactive writing, punctuation, spacing editing, phonemic awareness, concepts of print, identification of word parts and “families”, emphasis on reading strategies, introduction of new sight words.
Language Arts Skills – Depending on the day of the week, one of the following instructional events takes place daily.
·       Handwriting -  based on the Zaner Bloser format
·       Word Work – activities designed to reinforce reading and spelling skills
·       Shared Reading – poems and big books
·       Spelling

Writer’s Workshop:
·       Read-aloud- Investigating a variety of genres, discussing word usage, imagery, message of print,identifying an author’s writing style and purpose, making connection to our lives, the world, and other forms of writing.

Snack & Read-aloud

Writing:
·       Writing process – brainstorming, organizing thoughts, sketching, elaboration of ideas (adding important details),sticking to a main topic, stretching-out sounds, editing spacing punctuation, capitalization, grammar, revising,. Expanding, sequencing and using writing tools (pencils, ABC charts, Word Wall, etc.)
·       Individualized and small group support with teacher.
·       Lists, letters, memoirs, daily news, weekend news, prompts, poetry, fictional narratives, Small Moments, How-To’s, All About’s, etc.
·       Sharing – reading aloud and sharing writing samples.  Cheering each other on and complimenting effort!

Math
·       Everyday Mathematics
·       Focus on problem solving, communication, reasoning, real-life connections, investigating and exploring.
·       Constant use of math manipulatives for investigating and discovering.
·       Cooperative groups.
·       Integration of literature.
·       Topics of study based on CMT objectives and NCTM standards (National council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards) Patterns and   relationships, number sense, estimation, whole number operations, computation, geometry & spatial sense, measurement, statistic & probability, fractions, etc.
·       Student Workbooks – provide opportunities to practice skills and concepts.

Recess & Lunch (11:40-12:40)

Reader’s Workshop:
Purpose: To help student’s “fall in love” with reading
·       Read aloud- Investigating a variety of genres, discussing word usage, imagery, message of print, determine an authors writing style and purpose, making connections to our lives, the world and other forms of writing.  Discussing reading strategies, comprehension & fluency skills, etc.
·       Shared reading – emphasis on reading strategies, phonemic skills, comprehension and fluency.
·       Mini-lessons- emphasis on reading strategies, comprehension skills, fluency, phonemic skills, etc.
·       Independent Reading – set time-frame for independent and/or partner reading.
·       Sharing- sharing thoughts and ideas about text.  Incorporating new skills and concepts.
·       Guided Reading Groups – small group instruction with reading groups.  Incorporates a variety of mini-lessons emphasizing reading strategies, phonemic awareness, word work and comprehension skills.
·       Reading Response – responding to, as well as analyzing text.
·       Literature Circles/grand conversations – analyzing and responding to text in large and/or small groups.
·       Partner sharing – book discussion with a partner.
·       Reader’s Theater – promoting fluency, expression and character study.
·       Shopping for “just right/flat road” books – students choose their own books to read during independent reading time.

Science:
·       Life, earth and physical science studies.
·       Sampling of topics we will cover; apples, solids and liquids, butterflies, frogs, measurement, health
·       Integration of language arts and math skills
·       Authentic learning through observation and discovery.

Social Studies: (in addition to being integrated throughout the day)
·       Customs and traditions around the world, geography, study of country-regions of Canada, Mexico and China, map skills
·       History, holidays
·       Families, citizenship, neighborhoods, etc.

Specials – P.E., MUSIC, LIBRARY, COMPUTERS, ART and HEALTH.
