Current events must be completed once a month. It should be a one
paragragh summary of a science related current event topic.  Articles can come from the newspaper, magazines, or online sources.  A copy of the article needs to be attached to the final copy.  Also, a summary planner sheet needs to be filled out to serve as a guide for writing the summary. All students did one in class and have it to serve as a model for their own individual summaries.  Be sure to use the rubric as a checklist.

Grade 7 Science Action Project 20094272007_21134_0.bmp]

Think about this:
As consumers of science information, we are faced with countless articles, news stories, interviews, editorial cartoons, and conflicting results of studies in science.  Why?  Science is an evolving field and with numerous outlets.  Scientists are human beings with opinions.  Even a hypothesis, if you think about it, is an educated guess with latent opinions.  We all “think” we know the answer.  As a student and scientist, our role is to take information and make informed decisions.  After all, science is one aspect that is certainly all around us.  Your generation will face many complex challenges about the moral and ethical future of our planet, Earth, and the human beings that lead it.

Purpose:
To learn in depth about a science topic, make a decision, and create an action plan that acts on your opinion on this topic.

Task:                               Make a difference!
Immerse yourself in current science topics that we face today.  Select an area that seems interesting to you.  Find a passion for a limited subtopic in that area.  Create a partnership with a peer and explore the many aspects of your topic.  What are the issues related to your topic?  What is the scientific evidence out there?  Are there multiple viewpoints?  Who is most knowledgeable?  What research and evidence is most convincing?  When this has been achieved, you need to make an informed decision about what your view and opinion is on this topic.  Decide what can be done to promote your view.  Who is involved in policy making and decision making regarding your topic?  How would you teach others about this important issue and your views?  What can be financially done to promote change for your cause?  What are the steps necessary to promote change in society and how individuals can make a difference!

Timeline:
Week ending Jan. 23rd- Choose a topic
Week ending Jan. 30th- Collect research (10 articles) & get a folder
Week ending Feb 13th- Develop an opinion from evaluating your research
Week ending Feb 27th- Find a related Editorial Cartoon
Week ending Mar. 6th- Creation of an Editorial Cartoon
Week ending Mar. 19th- Choose a meaningful financial organization/commitment
Week ending April 1st- Write a power letter
Week ending April 15th- Role of scientist in your topic and training required
Week ending May 7th- Plan/Outline due for lesson to class
Week ending May 14, 21st & 28th- Midpoint checks on PowerPoint lesson to class
Week ending June 1st to 4th- Presentation of Lessons

You need a folder to store your information!

Choose a partner well!  Choose a partner that you can work with.  Choose a partner that will do their fair share in this project.  Choose a partner that you can get together with easily, outside of regular class hours.  You don’t necessarily have to agree on your opinion of the issue (in fact, that might be most informative), but you will need to present your presentation/lesson to the class together in June.  You may also choose to work independently on this project, if you wish.

Science Topic:_______________________________________________

Dear Parents,
I hope you can join me in this challenging, but important, scientific lesson for your child.  My hope is that by the end of the year, your child will have a greater understanding of a scientific topic, develop an informed opinion on that topic, and create an action plan that includes teaching others, writing a power letter to someone involved in this issue, and researching a charitable organization that works for their cause.  This does not involve raising money, simply using data bases to find out if an organization uses its donations wisely.  I will work in the classroom to assist students with the planning and requirements of each weekly deadline.  There will not be any additional Current Event Summary articles due for the remainder of the year.  It would be most helpful if you can ask your child how they are progressing with the above mentioned timelines and, also, most importantly, to share your knowledge and views on their topic.  Often, issues have a myriad of related and entangled economic, political, and social consequences that your child might not be aware of.  This can be a joint project with a peer(s) or an individual project.  Joint projects will require some additional meeting time outside of regular class time.  As always, our library is available to all students after school until timeHour15Minute153:15 from Monday to Thursday.  Thanks and, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me at]mjorgensen@cantonschools.org
