Traveling Notebook
Due: EVERY Thursday
Please have your child pick out a special notebook that will become their Traveling Notebook. It is important that they select what they will use so they will have more investment in their writing. However, please keep in mind line spacing when choosing a notebook. (Ex. College ruled notebooks don’t give a lot of space for second grade handwriting!)
This is an opportunity for your child to do some personal writing of their own choice. They can share what they have written to the class or not. They MUST write. Lists, poems, stories, thoughts, etc. are some examples of writing they can do.
During the week, we will take “field trips” to different parts of the school (wavy wall, cafeteria, playground, butterfly garden, etc.) and have some time to free write in their Traveling Journal.
Every day, the notebook should be coming home so they can write if they are inspired. On Wednesday, the notebook will be sent home. If your child has not written in his/her notebook by that time, they need to make an entry. Wednesday is Writing Homework. This entry (or entries) should demonstrate at least 20 minutes of writing. Actual WRITING, not “thinking” about writing ideas! I will send home a list of writing ideas monthly. If your child is having a difficult time coming up with an idea, this list should help!
Traveling Notebooks are supposed to do just that: TRAVEL. The idea is that it will just become habit to carry this special notebook to record some thoughts, etc. all the time. So, grab it when you’re going to dinner at a restaurant, going to a soccer practice, ballet, and all the various activities your child is involved in. Drawings are allowed if they go with some form of writing. If you have any questions, let me know.
THANKS for your help!
