In addition to ensuring that the library collection is updated and processed, lessons are taught supporting both grade level initiatives as well as state and national information literacy standards. The goal is to expose students to library terminology and procedures in order to become responsible, competent, independent library users. Research experiences are offered at each grade level. Content covered across grade levels builds each year upon previous skills which include:
- Exposure and appreciation of good literature (including award-winning books such as the CT state Nutmeg award and literary genres)
- Research and thinking strategies based on Big Six Research Model.
- "As researchers we question" is my mantra.
1. TASK DEFINITION – What needs to be done?
2. INFORMATION SEEKING STRATEGIES – What resources can I use?
3. LOCATION & ACCESS – Where can I find these resources?
4. USE OF INFORMATION – What can I use from these resources?
5. SYNTHESIS – What can I make to finish the job?
6. EVALUATION – How will I know I did my job well?
- Information Literacy. This includes learning to use district databases such as World Book Online and ICONN.
- Safety and web site evaluation.
- Use of non-fiction resources to find information that is integrated into meaningful curriculum related activities.
