Visual Arts Goal @ CIS
In line with the National and State Visual Arts Standards, it is our goal at CIS to further students' artistic literacy. Students will explore various art media and techniques, respond and critique their work and the work of others, and express their thoughts, ideas, and ideals artistically. Cherry Brook Primary School & Canton Intermediate School Art Departments Present:
CREATiONS FOR OUR COMMUNiTY
Empty Bowls Event
An evening of Art, Soup, and Community Awarenes
Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012
Dear Parents / Guardians,
Cherry Brook Primary School and Canton Intermediate School have joined forces with an exciting community outreach project! Our goal is to raise money to help local families in need!
During the month of January students in grades 3 and 4 will create ceramic bowls. These bowls will be donated to our Creations for Our Community – Empty Bowl s Event. On April 3rd (snow date April 4th ) families and guests within the community are invited to CIS for a soup dinner! The basic premise is simple: in exchange for a suggested donation to fight hunger ($3 for children / $5 for adults), guests select a handmade bowl and enjoy soup donated by local restaurants, stores, and our own Canton
High School’s Family and Consumer Science classes. Guests are then asked to keep their bowl as a reminder of the meal’s purpose. Every time the bowl is taken from the cupboard, we hope you are reminded that someone’s bowl is always empty and that on this one occasion you helped to alleviate hunger and could choose to do so again at anytime.
This event will allow students to actively participate in charitable efforts, gain awareness of the issues of hunger and to make a positive contribution to their own community. This program will also advocate for Arts Education. Nurturing the creative process through the arts enhances the possibility of finding new solutions to old problems.
Why Service Learning in Our Schools:
Community Service Learning is an instructional methodology which provides students with an opportunity to learn through active participation in organized service experiences integrated into the curriculum. Students gain a sense of responsibility, an awareness of their individual role as part of the whole community, a concern and care for others, and an understanding of the meaning of citizenship and service and of the value of community involvement. Learning is taken out of the abstract and connected to real life experiences, giving students an added sense of meaning and purpose. The community Service Learning Center, Springfield, MA
We look forward to providing a powerful Service Learning Project for our students! Be sure to see bowls created by our own teachers as well! Proceeds will go to Canton Food Bank and a portion will be donated to the International Empty Bowls Project to keep these efforts alive.
Sincerely,
Ellen Raposo Deb Beaudoin
