First grade is such an exciting year!  This is a time when students blossom both academically and socially.  Through a nurturing environment, they become budding readers, writers, mathematicians and scientists.  In addition, students develop friendships and learn the importance of being a good citizen.

We have a healthy snack every morning. If you send juice, please send 100% juice. Send a small snack that can be eaten in a few minutes. Be sure that your child can open it on their own.
Our class consists of 20 students.

A Typical Day

Every day includes Reader's and Writer's Workshop.Children are encouraged to become more and more independent as the school year progresses. Both Reader's and Writer's Workshop include a short mini-lesson. Children are generally asked to do a specific task related to the mini lesson. On any given day, strategy groups, guided reading groups, shared reading, partner reading, conferencing, and/or independent reading may be occurring. When the workshop comes to an end, we reiterate the mini lesson and talk about the success of the task. We are also reviewing all of the letter formations learned in kindergarten.

Math instruction usually begins on the Smartboard which is used as an interactive teaching and support tool. Then the children are expected to show their knowledge in written form.Home Links are sent home three or four times per week. This is an independent Homework activity but it is also a good way for parents to become familiar with the terminology and the progression of math concepts. The children are very eager to show off their new found knowledge to their parents. Finally, the children all get to be Homework Super Heroes!

Science is presented in a very Hands-On manner. This includes discussion and  observation. We welcome their unique perceptions and opinions.
