Independent Studies
* Independent studies are an option given to all students who have not been identified as gifted. (It is a requirement for identified 5th and 6th grade students. See gifted identification process for more information.)
* Students who choose to work on an independent study will be given the extra responsibility of working on their project both in and out of school along with completing their regular academic work. Requirements for each student are given at their first class with Miss Zimmerman. Each year a student participates in an independent study, a component will be added to continue and further the growth of their critical thinking.
* The students will be leaving a regular academic component once a week for a half hour to work in the A.C.T. room on their topic. (Fifth and sixth grade identified students meet for an hour twice a week and have more requirements).
* Independent studies are for all grades 4, 5, and 6. Some students have already expressed an interest in working on a topic as an independent study. I will be having all independent study students fill out a Renzulli Interest-A-Lyzer to help me guide them to an appropriate topic.
* Students who work on an independent study are required to participate in the A.C.T. Fair towards the end of the school year. This is a two night event, in which the student will be assigned one night that they must attend and stay for the entire hour and a half.
* I ask for teacher and parent/guardian feedback on whether they think that the extra work is suitable for the child.
