How were the vignettes created?

In the classroom, students discussed the differences between fiction and historical fiction. They discussed their ethical responsibility to mirror the mood, tone, and content of the interview to the highest degree possible. They made decisions concerning the parts of the interview they wanted to elaborate and the degree to which they felt comfortable in taking poetic license.

Then, they began to write. Most of the stories you’ll find printed here went though several stages of drafting and editing, but ultimately the creative decisions belonged to the students.

At the project’s conclusion, an evening reception was held at the Canton High School auditorium and library. Students read their pieces in front of the veterans and their families and presented them with a copy. The evening concluded with a social hour hosted by the students.
