Welcome to Canton Middle School's Web Page!

Canton Middle School was incorporated by the Canton Board of Education in 2004 to implement the best educational practices for Canton's early adolescents. The school comprises grades 7 and 8 and will serve approximately 300 students in 2009-2010. Canton Middle School was extremely proud to be named the Connecticut Association of Schools Middle School of the Year – 2008-09.

Students in Canton Middle School are divided into one of three interdisciplinary teams. Each student is part of an advisory group, led by a faculty advisor. All students take a core academic program (English, science, social studies and math) with over 75% electing a world language. There is a broad range of courses in the various arts, including band, chorus, technology education, computer, art, and FACS. A wide ranging co-curricular and athletic program is maintained as an integral part of the school's mission.

Front Page News:

Internet Safety
On Friday, March 26th assemblies will be held for 7th graders (9:30) and 8th graders (10:30) on Internet Safety. These assemblies will be presented by students from CREC’s Public Safety Academy whose program has been approved by CT State Police Cyber Task Force and the US Attorney’s Office in CT. Topics to be addressed are: Dangers of the Internet, Cyber-Bullying, Sexting, and Safe Use of Social Networking Sites. Parents are invited to attend. Please contact the Middle School Office if you are interested.

Website Concern
We all know the potential for misuse of the internet by adolescents. Social networking sites continue to be a concern and a place where students use poor judgment. Two new sites have come to our attention that parents should be of particular concern. Please click on this attachment called Danger on the Web for additional details.

Teacher of the Year
All parents, students and community members are invited and encouraged to nominate a Canton Teacher for the honor of becoming Canton’s Teacher of the Year for 2010-2011. To do this all anyone has to do is complete the nomination form (click on Teacher of the Year Nomination). The completed nomination form should be sent to the Middle School office by April 30. Canton’s winner is announced on the first day of school for teachers in late August.

Canton Middle School Stock Market Team
Eighth graders Jacky You and Zach Bowyer came in second place in the Hartford Courant Stock Market Game completed in late December. They competed against 190 teams from across the state, studying and researching stocks and making “virtual” investments. A couple of times each month they checked their “portfolios” and made investment decisions. They “made” about $5,000 in the ten weeks. (Stock tip from the investment firm of Bowyer & You: Buy “Google” when it's down – which is what they did.) The boys worked on this project through Mike Hughes and Kris Cimini during their time in the Language Lab. Jacky and Zach have been invited to the Stock Market Game Program Awards Ceremony in the Spring. They are currently available for consulting work for a small fee.
