Art Club
Mrs. Hughes
During art club students have the opportunity to work on: assignments for their art courses, their portfolios for art school or do some art work for pure enjoyment. Assistance will be given to students who come in and want help with ideas planning projects, posters for their class projects. We will be planning some workshops during the year, which you will have to sign up in advance to attend. A modest fee for materials will be charged for these "special workshops". Workshop themes and dates will be written in the AM announcements.Schedule of meeting dates are posted outside the art room and on the EGO website: chsego.org

Athletic Council

Athletic Council is a group of students who plan and carry out the activities for field day during Spirit Week. They also plan the athletic banquet, held at the end of the school year. The banquet acknowledges those who have participated in and excelled in athletics.. Athletic Council meets during the school day.

Canton Drug and Alcohol Council
Dr. Grossman
This group is a town –wide council that attempts to focus on prevention of the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The goal is awareness and education. The group consists of town officials, parents, students, and other community members and meets the fourth Thursday of the month.

Connecticut Forum
Ms. Ruby
The goals of the Forum are to build bridges of communication, understanding and cooperation between individuals and among civic, corporate, educational, community and non-profit organizations based on shared interests, concerns , joint projects, and issues. Meetings are one Tuesday a month.

Creative Writing
Mrs. Mikan
A creative writers' group where students may bring poetry, short stories, or other writings to share with others and receive feedback. Students may also read poetry they like, if they credit the author. We hope to host a poetry show or coffee house in the spring. All are welcome. Meets every other Wednesday from 2:15-3:15

Esteem

ESTEEM is a group of High School students who present daylong workshops to younger students. These students are chosen for their strength of character, willingness to make a commitment and eagerness to participate and make the activity a priority in their busy schedules. These students must also be willing to take a stand against drugs and alcohol. ESTEEM rehearses Thursday evenings 5-7.

FCCLA

An after- school activity that meets twice a month to encourage leadership skills, volunteerism, and opportunities to bake, sew, etc. All grades 9-12 are welcome to attend the meetings which are held on the first and third Wednesday of every month, in room 207 from 2:15 –3:30 p.m. Lunch time meetings will be held to organize the group.

Stage Productions/Musicals

The CHS Musical Theatre Department presents a full scale Broadway musical or a dinner & Cabaret in March of each year. All students grade 9-12 are invited to audition for solos, chorus, and other important roles. Musicals presented in the past years include “Grease”, “South Pacific”, “Carousel”, and “Les Miserables”.

Drama Club

The CHS Drama Club will focus on the fundamental aspects of play production: casting, acting, directing, set design and construction, lighting and sound design, costume and make-up design and publicity. Weekly meetings/workshops will be held on Tuesdays at 2:20 during the fall semester. Members will produce a full dramatic production second semester, and will need to be able to attend evening rehearsals All students are very welcome.

CHS Debate is a group of students who meet to debate certain topics that are apparent in the news, as well as societies around the world.

Have you ever wondered what countries talk about when they get together behind closed doors? Well, here is your chance. A club that lets you act out world affairs issues with a group of your peers. Not only do you act it out, but you come together to understand how small our world really is.

Mock Trial (Law) Club

The Mock Trial Club is composed of students 10-12 who are interested in the law. We begin to meet in November and continue through March. Our goal is to successfully compete against other high schools in a mock trial competition held in the spring. We normally go to trial in either Hartford or Waterbury Superior Court. Students act as either lawyers or witnesses. The case is always very interesting and a fun learning experience.

Math Team

Canton High School is a member of the Capital Area Mathematics League (CAML). The team competes in monthly meets October through March, and a banquet is held in May when teams and individuals are recognized. Members are sophomores through seniors who have been recommended by a teacher.

EGO On-Line Newspaper

The EGO, our high school on-line newspaper, is published entirely in-house. Student reporters involved in various clubs and activities cover events, take photos and write articles to submit electronically. Students create Web pages for the news articles and upload them onto the Web. Computer skills of the student staff are an asset but not required.

National Honors Society

National Honor Society is a group of students who demonstrate excellence in four areas of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Membership is based on a selective process by a faculty council consisting of five teachers. The Honor Society strives to uphold its standards and provide leadership and service to the school and community. Its activities range from co-hosting Spirit Week, to providing a tutoring service to all students. NHS meets Tuesday mornings.

Peer Counseling

Peer Counseling is designed to provide a support network of students for other students. All students are invited to apply for the program. Members are selected on the basis of their ability to relate well to others in addition to general characteristics, such as responsibility, maturity, common sense, and the ability to follow through. Peer counselors meet Friday mornings from 7:15-7:35.

The Reach Out Program is a group of students who volunteer their time to tutor/help kids in both Canton Intermediate and Cherry Brook Primary schools.

SEARCH
Mr. Messier
SEARCH is an activity sponsored by the science department offering students an opportunity to do real science. Four times per year, SEARCH students will travel (during the school day) to a nearby stream to perform a variety of scientific tests to determine the quality of the water. Activities will include sampling water chemistry, performing flow studies, collection and identification of aquatic invertebrates, and assessment of stream bacteria. At the end of the school year, a report of our findings is sent to the CT D.E.P. One quarter credit per year is awarded for successful completion of the SEARCH program.

SFS (Substance Free Students)

Substance Free Students get together as a group and plan activities such as skiing, Six Flags, and a haunted hayride. Throughout the year the students will be able to participate in these extra activities as long as they're substance free.

The Student Council is a body of elected class officers and interested students who conduct various activities throughout the year (Spirit Week, dances, LAUNCH, etc.). Student Council meets Wednesday mornings as needed.

Human Relations Council

The Human Relations Council is a group of Junior and Senior High School students and faculty members who are concerned with issues leading to violence, and who have joined together in an effort to understand some of the causes of violence to work toward improving the school atmosphere. The HRC meets Thursday mornings.

The LINK program is designed to help Canton Jr./ Sr. High School students make connections with senior citizens and mentally and physically challenged individuals. LINK meets during the school day.

Milner Project

A terrific opportunity for community service this inner-city tutoring program provides students in grades 10-12 experience in elementary education. Visits to Hartford's Milner Elementary School are monthly, with a picnic in CHS at the end of the school year.

Theatre Technology Club

The Theater Technology Club provides hands-on experience in supplying technical support (lighting, sound, etc.) for school-based theater and community events. Activities focus on creativity, experimentation, collaboration, and other issues that are meaningful to the group. The Theater Technology Club fosters a sense of ownership; students are directing the process. The club is open to all middle and high school students. No prior experience necessary.

For a group of seniors that are interested in becoming a part of the Yearbook staff, and are willing to participate in the collecting of advertisements, layout of the book, as well as its overall production. Yearbook staff meets Tuesday mornings.

CHS TV offers students the opportunity to get involved in the production, research, and filming of a TV newscast about our school. The group presents their finalized work to fellow students during various showings of CHS TV throughout the year. CHS TV meets during lunches, as needed.

In Jazz band, a student is given the opportunity to learn how to excel as a Jazz musician. Both groups rehearse Monday evenings.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization. Canton High School will work with Habitat for Humanity International to join them to build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with those who lack adequate shelter.

School Student Improvement

This committee meets weekly before school on Thursday's mornings from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. with the Assistant Principal to work on projects that help improve the school facility.

The International Club is dedicated to the study of other nations and their customs. Members will learn about languages, customs, holidays, and traditions of many different cultures around the world.
