Laura Esquivel was born in Mexico City in 1951 and currently lives in Mexico City, Mexico. She was a former kindergarden teacher before she decided to be come a screenwriter (Laura Esquival was originally a screenwriter). She was nominated for the Ariel Award for best screenplay in 1992. Like Water For Chocolate went on to become the largest grossing foreign film ever released in the United States. Laura won the Abby Award (American booksellers Association) in 1992 for Like Water For Chocolate.
