The
Chocolate War, by Robert Cormier, has been known as
"brilliant" and "cleverly written" by multiple
critics.This novel based in the twisted school system of Trinity Prep
School based in New England.
The Chocolate War tells the actions of Jerry Renault,
who is just trying to get through his freshman year at Trinity. All
he wants to do is fit in until one day the Vigils, a secret society,
changes that. In this story you will read about how a harmless chocolate
sale turns into a war. This war is being played out between Jerry
Renault and the Vigils. This secret society believes that Jerry is
trying to be better than the Vigils. This group sees Jerry as a threat
and needs to do something with him and not-sold chocolate.
On the way through this novel you will meet many interesting characters
such as Archie Costello, who is a major part of the war as well as
the leader of The Vigils. "The Goober" is Jerry's best friend,
Emile Janza is a well known troublemaker, and Obie who is Archie's
friend are other characters who play important roles, there are also
three profesors that are known as "Brothers".
How this war turns out you will have to figure out yourself. The
Chocolate War will throw you characters and events that make
it the novel you will love and hate.
