Principal's Message:

Cherry Brook Primary School is a Pre-kindergarten to Grade 3 school containing approximately 540 students. Nested within the lovely hills of Canton, we actively support students in their learning, academic and social development. We are fortunate to have a knowledgeable, dedicated staff that supports our students in fostering a positive collaboration with a wonderful parent base. We are fortunate to have the best of all worlds here at Cherry Brook!

Our school goals for the 2007-2008 school year were developed by discussing our strengths and needs at Cherry Brook. At that point, we prioritized our needs to help focus where we could best improve student learning. From there, we agreed on two school goals to focus our energies this year.

Our primary goal is students will improve their learning in the areas of reading and math. Even though approximately 90% of our students were at or above the proficiency level on the Connecticut Mastery Tests (CMTs), we feel we can still promote achievement for our students. With our summer work on implementing Reader’s Workshop along with the past focus on literacy, the reading aspect of this goal is a continuation of our desire to increase all of our students’ ability to understand what they read. For math, when we examined our results from the CMTs, we determined that we need to improve students’ ability to apply their knowledge particularly with number operations and measurement. In both areas, students need to be able to apply their mathematical strategies in every day situations. For example, when solving a story problem students need to figure out whether they will need to add or subtract before they can even attempt the solution.

While our primary goal focuses on the individual, our secondary goal involves the entire school and how the individual fits in as part of the whole. Under the premise of creating memories, we examined how we can have students feel valued and more connected to the school. Therefore, we came up with a goal to establish a school culture that celebrates students’ accomplishments. This will enhance students’ sense of belonging and allow us at CBPS to be able to single out what makes us special. We have already begun addressing this goal as well by having our All-School Meetings. Additionally, students are sharing announcements in the morning and in our newsletter you will see evidence of student work.

The purpose of our goals is to enhance the learning experience for all students at Cherry Brook. It also allows us to direct our energies towards a common goal and establish a cooperative, community working together for student success. As always, if you have any questions, feedback or ideas, feel free to contact me at school either through a phone call, note or email.
