Chapter 3 quiz - Friday 10/17
In class assignment: (10/8 - 10/14)
Stamp Act/Primary Source/Outline
Question:
“The Stamp Act crisis was the first major dispute between the American colonists and the British government. What was/were the major point(s) of contention between the colonists and the government? Based on the documents provided, do you believe that an American wish to be independent was an inevitable outcome in the next 10-12 years?”
Explain/support with quotations from primary source documents.
Power Outline Format:
P1 – Thesis Statement (written out in sentence, can be more than one sentence) – Formulate a response that creates an overarching statement that answers both elements of the question.
P2 – Points of contention – (written sentence) This should connect the overarching statement with actual items that explain your reasoning.
P3(s) – explanation of reasoning
P4(s) – quotes that support your P3, you will need at least one quote for each P3
You may simply identify the author (S.A.C., Jenyns, Pitt) and first three words … last three words of the quote. Ex: Pitt, “None of these …their constitutional rights”
P2 – Independence an inevitable outcome? (written sentence) This should connect the overarching statement with actual items that explain your reasoning.
Suggestion:
- start with a thesis statement…it need not be etched in stone
- identify reasons/explanations (P3’s)
- Find quotes to support P3’s – if you can not support it with a quote, don’t use it as an explanation (p3)
- Write P2 sentences that connect overarching statement to reasons/explanation
Do all these steps on scratch paper, then after you have tweaked everything to make it all work together, write out the outline a clean piece of paper that you hand in.
