Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Hello! Welcome to first grade! First grade is such an exciting year.
We learn and discover new and awesome things. Through individual study,
partnership, and group work, we learn many interesting concepts. Favorite
study topics for first graders in science include: Butterflies & Frogs, Liquids and Solids, and Measurement
In Writing Workshop, we develop pieces of writing called "Small
Moments". That involves writing in detail about a true event in our
students'lives. They develop a short time line about their topic. Then
they zoom in and tell with descriptive detail everything that happened,
what they were thinking, what was said, any sensory information (what they
were seeing, touching, etc.) They tell the outside story (the events) and
the inside story (what was going on in their head). After that, we take
the writing skills we've learned from Small Moments and apply them to write
"Edge of Your Seat" stories. Again, these are true events, told as a Small
Moment, but suspense, tension, and strong emotion are added to the story.
Later, we take the same skills we have learned in these two areas to start
writing realistic fiction. We also study real authors to try to add some
of their author's craft to our own writing.
Reading Workshop will be held on a daily basis. We will create a strong base and foundation
for reading with constant practice and familiarity with phonemes(sounds letters make). We will use guided reading, shared reading, read alouds, individual reading(silent sustained reading), paired reading and reading buddies to advance our reading ability and comprehension.
We will use Everyday Math as the cornersone of our math program. Homework will be given 3 nights a week. Knowing basic math facts for addition will be vital to your child's success. Please help yopur child learn and remember their linking numbers, i.e. 9+1, 8+2, 7+3, etc. If they say them each night and remember them, then you will be contributing to their achievements later on in their math curriculum.
I anticipate a fun filled and exciting year!
Don't forget to send in a nutritious snack and drink for your child to enjoy each morning,
Snack time will be around 10:00 with lunch and recess at 12:00.

Homework for Mr. Sherman's Class
Math homework is assigned Monday through Wednesday.
Homework is normally based on that day's instruction so it
is difficult to always project very far ahead what the homework
assignment will be as it depends what lesson we learned in class that day.
Reading is assigned for each day for a minimum of 10 minutes in the fall and we try to stretch that to 15 minutes by springtime.
Practicing math facts is always important in first grade. Our expectation is
that students will leave first grade knowing the basic facts in
addition and subtraction.
