5/22     Handout of Final Project/Exam Requirements. Discuss how to begin project working in a group of two:must spin for educational
           level,money in the bank for savings; then begin the assignment as to where to work (fill out a job application),living,insurance.
           Class time will be used to complete the project;assessment will be by authentic assessment. DUE JUNE 12th;make-up on JUNE 16th.

          What are the advantages/disadvantages of using credit?-points for discussion

5/11   Concepts students should know from Unit 4 on Investing: compund interest and its value to savings, Rule of 72,etc.
         Refer to vocab sheet and apply words to concepts.

5/12   Questions one should ask befor using credit: Do I need it? Can i afford it? costs? etc.

Week of May 1-5

5/1      Complete video on Privacy issues

5/2     Return papers,tests and review;QUIZ-Privacy Issues;prepare questions to ask tomorrow's speaker on investing.

5/3    Speaker-CPA on Investments.

5/4    Using the financial section of USA Today: search for a stock to track its progress for one week;summarize one current article
        on a finacial issue that will impact your future monetary decisions.

5/5    Computer Lab to research a stock,it's holdings,level of risk,etc.


Week of April 24-28

4/24    Complete graphing of stocks;how do value,blend and growth stocks differ? How to negoiate financial aid decisions when the aid is
           short of the required need?

4/25    In groups, compare three mutual funds for cost,risk, initial investment,type of funds,etc. Share final comparisons

4/26    Could you be a victim of Identity Theft? Questionnaire and evaluate how to protect your privacy. Discuss social security issues,
           cell phones,medical records,etc. Credit Reporting agencies;checking,banking, and debit cards.

4/27    Video-Identity Theft

4/28    Complete video Discuss how the issues of privacy have changed since 9/11.

Week of April 3-7

4/3      Balance the checking account of a business where you are the treasurer. More Practice!

4/4      Compare your banking results! Reconcile your bank statement.
          Begin to read Unit 4 in workbook on Investments. Complete Assignment 4.1 and 4.2.

4/5      Begin introduction of how investments bnefit  a person over time. Choice and how one makes a decision on their investment style.

4/6     Discussion of risk style in investments,time value,choices, what is a retirement plan and will they be there when you retire?

4/7    Research in library: How to evaluate fund managers,mutual funds,etc.

Week of March  27-31

           Using Banking Workbook, practice how to deposit and endore checks;how to write a check correctly, place cecks and debits into                checkbook and reconcile bank statement at the end of the month.
          Include the problems that occur with unrecorded deposits,checks,overdrafts,service charges or free-checking.

3/31    Using four local banks,research currecnt interest rates for CD's, Money Market Accounts and loans for new and used cars.
          Find the best rates and compare.

Week of March 20-24

Use Banking Workbook to reinforce activities on Rule of 72, savings vocabulary and alternative sources of savings.

In class, creaet a pamphlet that encourages a teenager how to use an ATM card safely. Refer to banking booklet for info.


Week Of March 13-17

3/13    Prepare visual and research info for class presentation tomorrow on Trip with consumer price comparisons.
          Use rubric as guide to expectations required in presentation.

3/14   Each group to present their research to class with explanation as to how they found the least expensive trip givwn the same time-frame as the class.

3/15  Read Pg. 8-10 in "HOw To Do Your Banking" and complete worksheet on savings.

3/16  Review for test on FRi 3/17 on Budgeting-Unit 3;return tests on  Careers.

Week of March 6-10

3/6     Life Smarts "Consumer Quiz";begin consumer complaint letter for a defective product.

3/7    Worksheet on Assets and Liabilities and how to balance out net worth;review of Unit 3 on Budgeting terms.Due at end of class.

3/8   Computer Lab-Complete research on Federal Agencies that deal with consumer issues;consumer complaint letter and begin to research how to analyze the best item for the dollar in the marketplace:choose a trip,vehicle,etc.

3/9   Complete work begun yesterday. Three students to judge the most effective research completed prior to purchasing an item.

3/10  Test: Budgeting Unit 3.

2/28   Complete Activity 3.1 pg 32 on How to Read a Check Stub.
         What is the difference between a Salary and Hourly Employee/Job.

3/1    Review worksheet on FICA(especially how to read tax tables and determine exemptions,state and federal taxes owed,deduction of             interest,etc.) What is the best use of a tax refund? Should you have a refund? Pros and Cons.
        Review for TEST on Fri 3/3 on Unit 2: Careers.

3/2    Consumer Complaint Letter:How to Complain to Get Results-begin in class and type tomorrow after test.

3/3   Test:Unit 2;complete consumer complaint letter to an actual company to seek a change in service/product,etc.

Week of Feb 22-24

2/22     Budget with parental feedback due.;p24 in text-what is a COL and COLA?
           Why do the elderly struggle on past promised pensions,social security? would you prefer a COLA or not? Explain.
           Compare COL in Canton-Hartford -New York City. What accounts for the differences?
           What constitutes an "emergency fund?" Is a savings account an "emergency fund?"

2/23    Begin to read Chapter(Unit 3) on Budgeting including:
          W-2; W-4 and what do all the lines of information mean.

2/24    Worksheet from CT CPA's on Budgeting or plan a budget for your Prom expenses.

Week of Feb 13-17

2/13      Class activity:follow worksheet to make budget decisions using Skittles by allocating the required amount per catergory;revise budget now that there is not enough money to cover all categories;What did you change and Why? Explain.

            How does this differ from your responsibiliities as an adult?

2/15     Video-Budgeting;Packet of personal finance vocabulary and worksheet on Budgeting.

2/16    Speaker:Gibb's College "On Your Own:What Does Life Really Cost?" Worksheet simulation to problem solve how to live on your own
                        on a given income-hard choices!

2/8         Refer to text: college choices and costs;living on your own and the cost;FAFSA and its importance in financial aid discussions.

2/9        TEST:Unit 1-GOALS<etc.

2/10     Budgeting Project -Set up a spread sheet listing your expenses for next year;refer to rubric for format.

Week of Jan 30-Feb 3

1/30    Using the self-evaluation sheet provided based upon Suzie Orman's book on
             finances, where does your money go? After completing sheet, answer worksheet
            as to where you could begin to make changes in your lifestyle that could result in  
             more dollars in your pocket? Can you see changes that your family could also  make?

1/31      Introduce Chaper 1 from text: Decisions,Goals,Financial Planning and their relationsip to each other.
            From text in Chapter 1,determine a short,intermediate, and long term goal toward which to strive. Determine a time line and cost to
            achieving it.
            Choose a financial goal you are trying to achieve by June. Save your written goal to be addressed throughout the course and
             reevaluate in June.

2/1       Worksheet: Reflection as to how you view money and where did these feelings toward money occur?
           Written summary of how positive feelings about money impact one's life. Agree or disagree.


2/2        Due- Summary of current article on the financial world and its impact on you as a consumer.
            Life and Choices Worksheet-create your own personal time-line from age 20 to 60.
                     Where will you live,what will you do, who will be your closest friends,family,etc.
                     Discussion : what impact do short,medium and long term goals have upon choices?
                     Homework-choose a goal you have in life and describe what must be done within a
                                         time-frame to achieve this goal.

2/3         Refer to Goals and how changes occur that make us change,alter or give up our
                     goals. Activity-Balancing the budget with beans-choices one must make when life
                     requires one to make difficult decisions.
WEEK OF January 25-27

1/25 New semester begins as does Personal Finance class! Welcome to a class that will  provide answers to those questions about
      "Where does my money go?" Throughout this class,questions will be answered to provide each student with financial skills
        to enter adulthood as discriminating consumers.
        Introduction to Course with course outline and expectations.
        Introductory activity :"What Does It Take to be a Millionaire?"" Interestingly,millionaires are not born with money but work and save for
        it!. Discuss your perceptions.
      
1/26  Textbooks assigned. Bring to class daily; plus classwork will be supplemented with handouts.
        DUE-Every Thursday a current article related to the world of finances either from the newspaper,on-line, or magazine.
                 A copy of the article with a paragragh summary of the article and its relevance to you as a consumer is required also.
       Values and Spending Activity -assess how you spend money;use this activity to assess where does the money go when given a
                                                          choice. Are you surprised? Why or why not? Are you similar to your peers? What was the greatest
                                                        difference of how you spend money as compared to your peers?
